We are already planning Valentines crafts at the library...and summer programs...So despite the few days remaining until Christmas, to me it seems strange to be reading about it. {I am sure the lateness of Tofurkey Day has something to do with the feeling of strange too} Anyhoo, This isn't a new book. It came out "full size" in 2004. And, I'd say, it's not the best of the series by these two talented women...that would probably be the first "Bear Snores On." However, I just picked up the newer smaller size with its "library binding" (which in library/bookstore lingo means it doesn't have an extra cover & the cover is printed on the hardback of the book) is really a big plus for lap-sit reading.

If you are buying it to share with groups stick with the original size. But as a gift for your favorite little storytimer, this is a perfect holiday treat. I love Jane Chapman's realistic-ish, sweet animals (in their unrealistic friendships). There are eight or nine Bear books from this duo. Bear loses a tooth, feels scared, gives thanks, makes new friends...he's a busy bear. This time, Bear's friends (smaller animals who he met in previous picture book outings) try to keep him up for the big winter holiday...and though they nap (as bear wraps and Santa sneaks up to fill stockings) Bear is successful...but gets his nap in the end under a cozy blanket. Sweet & definitely worth reading and re-reading with cocoa!
