I’ve been reading Repairman Jack books since I was in Junior High…like the character Jack is in these books. In fact, I started reading F Paul Wilson books IN 1983 which is the year in which the the first book takes place (creeepy). Jack and I are the same age...neat! If you are into slightly supernatural, mysterious adventure books & you haven’t read any Repairman Jack books (no matter whether you are a “young” adult or just act like one when no one’s looking) this is a series you ought to investigate. Wilson is a master at constructing conspiracies and page-turning adventures. He is a skilled author for adults and he brings that talent to the YA market quite successfully (unlike others I could name <cough>Grisham<cough>, <hack>Cussler<hack>, <hurl>Patterson<hurl>...oh wait, Patterson can't write well for any one of any age) Wilson's prose is easy to read. His tales are engaging, and his supernatural milieu is believable. Pick up one of the main series for yourself and one of these the YA in your life. There’s even a handy reading guide to the series in the back! If you are already a fan of the author or the character, DO NOT let the YA label scare you away. How much fun do you think it is finding out what Jack was like as a teen? You get to watch him pull his first fixes! Priceless! (sorry about all the exclamation points) No knowledge of the main series is necessary to enjoy these, but you should probably read these in order (though Wilson wrote them OUT of order...his publisher made him switch the order of "Circles" and "Vengeance" and I am not entirely down with that switch...read em and see if you agree). They are all mysteries solved within the novel with an over arching story to the trilogy that ties inn to Jack's later life. Wilson is currently filling in the years between these three and the main series. Young thriller fans will soon be able to grow up with Jack. |
