The latest books I am recommending to everyone who asks for something that is even remotely like them are Beth Revis's trilogy of young adult science fiction novels just completed this year. Called the "Across the Universe" books after the first title in the series, the second is "Million Suns" and the third "Shades of Earth." As you will see, I am a huge fan of genre mash-ups: mystery/fantasy, historical/sci-fi, etc. These are, I guess sci-fi/mystery-thrillers. It is a rare book or series that I literally can't put down & I could not stop reading these. Beth Revis better be glad that I picked the first up when I did (right before the third came out) or I would have been at her house peering over her shoulder to find out what came next. These are very twisty tales, and I don't want to ruin them in any way, but they tell the story of Amy who accompanies her parents on the first mission from Earth to colonize another planet. Most of the crew is put into cryosleep for the long journey. Amy doesn't really want to go, but both her parents are going, and that doesn't leave her a lot of choice. Unfortunately, she is awakened early--to find a strange society has developed among the crew not put into cryosleep...and someone is murdering the frozen crew one by one. She has to figure out who, while trying to adapt to the idea that her parents won't wake up for years...she will be their age or older when they do. And other than to say that the characters are realistic and the writing is strong that's all I want to tell you. Oh, did I mention they're GREAT?! I picked the first up because it tickled a memory of a book I read and loved long ago called "Sleepers Wake" by Paul Samuel Jacobs. Which is one of the creepiest books I ever read. It's for younger audiences, but read that too if you can find it. In a perfect world, every teen and adult would be reading these books instead of craptastic tales of sparkly vampires and floppy sullen girls who can't make a decision or fend for herself...Read "Across the Universe" and you will definitely want to read the other two! |
