I am nearly through a reread of Roald Dahl's major children's books. {Fantastic Mr. Fox remains to be reread}. I have to say that I enjoyed them all...again! I think every child should encounter many or ALL of his works. Total madcap adventures, whacked out characters, wondrous invented language...too many good ingredients to miss. Sure they can be violent and scary, but so is life; isn't it better to experience an over-the-top horror like the Trunchbull (from Matilda) before coming face to face with her real world counterparts? Isn't it good to meet and laugh at the bully-brat children of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory before encountering them in life? (And such fun to watch them actually get what they deserve instead of being elected to political office--oops that slipped in). The good, lost child and the helpful adult (or giant). The powerful child, setting things right. Tricksy characters who punish those who richly deserve it. Excellent stories that children can listen to as small ones and return to for independent reading later. (Or as in Mr Tim's case return to repeatedly through out life). And, of course in writing this I realize that I have left out two of my favorites (it shouldn't be a surprise they are favorites if you have looked at the "Bonus" pages of this website) Revolting Rhymes and Dirty Beasts. I must go read them now! |
