There is probably some overlap with the "Tweenage" books I posted earlier. These are also the books I love to read most. These are for ages 7-12 (up to big people like me who like reading seven to twelve-year-olds like me). I have read several of these repeatedly (they also make excellent read alouds). I even read several of these first when I WAS 7-12; they've been my favorites that long. I only nominated one for Newbery; but if I'd been able, I probably would up that number to three. (Not every most excellent book is a Newbery and at least two of these aren't eligible since they weren't American). And, if my eyeball isn't failing me, there's only one Newbery winner or honor on this list. SIX of them have sequels so if you like them too, you can keep reading about the same characters. :-) · Sleepers wake by Paul Samuel Jacobs · Sun and Spoon by Kevin Henkes · Bunnicula by James Howe · Higher Power of Lucky by Susan Patron · Clementine by Sarah Pennypacker · James and the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl · Bear Called Paddington by Michael Bond · Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster · The Grand Escape by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor · Runaway Ralph by Beverly Cleary |
