"You would say, 'Good morning!! How are you?' Crankenstein would say, 'MEHHRRRR!'"
Crankenstein is cranky even when faced with a huge stack of pancakes...of course, there is almost no syrup. Crankenstein is cranky when he has to go to school or when it rains or when it's so cold on Halloween that he has to wear a coat over his cool robot costume. Crankenstein hates waiting in lines (just wait until finds out he's too short to ride!) And of, course he's cranky when he has to take blucky cough medicine or when it's time for bed.
But what happens when he meets ANOTHER Crankenstein?...he LAUGHS! And returns to normal...for a while.
At our house we call Crankenstein "zombie." You might hear this just after the alarm in the morning: "MRRRRRR!" to which we say "Zombie in the hallway!
Dan Santat's big, bold, double-page spread illustrations of a Frankenstein-like boy are just great. They'll keep the pages turning, and they demand repeat readings. There are visual jokes (like the height requirement sign a few paces ahead of Crankenstein in the amusement park line) in nearly every illustration. What better way to talk about cranky feelings than to use humor? The fun and the silly may just banish the Crankenstein in YOUR house. Check it out! YOUR Crankenstein will thank you!
